A lot of people have trouble when they are crafting the novel synopsis. This is especially true if the novel is very long, in which case it can be especially difficult to condense it into just a couple of pages. When it comes to sending in your work for publication or a literary agent, including a synopsis is essential.
It is very important to remember that a synopsis will normally be the first thing that a prospective publisher reads. That is why it needs to be carefully thought out and it needs to explain your book in the best way possible. Of course, it also needs to give an accurate outline as to what the book is about. When a publisher reads the synopsis, they will ultimately decide whether they want or not to see more of your work.
If you have already written the whole novel, then it can be easier in some ways but harder in others. The best thing to do is have an outline of your book, an outline that you use for planning, for example. The best place to start is by writing some bullet points of the most important events that take place throughout your book in chronological order.
This should now be a rough outline of your book. Now what you need to do is get the bullet points together and use them to create an effective synopsis. Remember, the synopsis should generally not be more than a thousand words so you may have to cut certain notes out and try not to include too much, were still making sure that you get all the essential information in.
You might find it is synopsis is actually easier to write if you haven’t written the whole book, since a lot of people actually write a book based on some kind of synopsis that they have written before. Writing a plan beforehand is generally easier, since you can start with a brainstorm and a bunch of notes which can eventually be reconstructed into a proper legible synopsis.
