Even though writing is not the most difficult industry to get into, you have to keep in mind that there are a few things you will have to learn in order to be a good writer. This is why so many writers go through some sort of course or have a degree in creative writing.
Like art, writing fiction is a creative process, so there is no need for you to have a tertiary degree. If you look a bit further you will find that there are many successful writers that do not have a degree in writing. So, if you feel that you can do it without one, go right ahead and jot down a few ideas you may have.
There is one important thing you have to remember. A lot, if not all, new writers always make mistakes in the formatting of their writing. All areas of writing have a different format, for example, film script formats are different to TV scripts. Also, novels are different to TV and film scripts, and so are theatre plays. These are things you will have to bear in mind.
You will then need to figure out what you want to write, or which area of writing your want to be in. Would you like to write for children, or would you rather write for adults?
Once you know who you are writing for, you need to decide where you want to write – theatre, TV, film, magazines, or books. Also do you want to do into writing full novels or short stories? You do not need to take one of them, as there are many writers who excel in many different areas of writing.
