So you want to write a scary tale? Do you like things that go bump in the night? If so, you are in the right place. This article will give you some hair-raising tips on how to write a scary story.

The best place to start before writing a story or novel of any kind is to know the workings of that genre, in your case, horror. The perfect way to do this is to read the work of the horror masters. Read material from authors like Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and H.P. Lovecraft. Learn their styles, pacing, ideas, and etc. Doing this can be a truly invaluable resource!

Your plot is the driving force of your story. It has to be good, and it has to be truly frightening! There should also be an interesting conflict. Beyond that, it is up to you what your story will be about. There are many sub-genres in the horror field. Your theme could be psychological or feature a serial killer. Monsters, ghosts, and phobias are also popular topics. The best authors, though, will look into their own mind and find what they are afraid of. It makes the tale authentic.

Keep the tension in your work high. The more tension and action there is, the more people will want to keep reading. Also, add a surprising twist to your story. This can be simply a dramatic or comedic twist. A cliffhanger is a popular twist because it makes people keep thinking about the tale. Or it could be just a normal twist. Maybe the killer turns out to be your main character? Or could it be that all the events of the thriller have really been a dream?

Chilling stories are fun to read but even more fun to write. There are no limits to what can happen when you are the creator! Now that you have read some hints on how to write a scary story, you can get to the writing!
