How To Write A Short Story

Filed under: Novel writing — Tags: — admin @ 7:21 pm

Many have thought about how to write a short story, and been surprised with how difficult in can actually be. When starting out, it is important to remember that there is no secret to writing. However, there are many hints and tips you can try, that will allow your creative juices to get flowing.

Firstly, read: Nothing can teach you more about the different styles and techniques than reading. It is always best to stick to the type of books you enjoy reading. Make notes as to how they develop story lines, characters and locations.

It is important to be inspired. All stories begin with the ignition of an idea. So look for it, and remain open to anything that happens. Always carry a notepad to jot down things as they materialize.

Build the basic theme of your story. Write down the essential thread of how the story will get from A to B and so on. Remember, all stories need a beginning, middle, and an end.

Next, it is important to create your characters. Get to know them. What is their background? What have they done before? Do they have a favorite food, or drink? You cannot spend too much time adding to the rich story of your characters.

Once all the basics are in place, begin writing. There will be additions, and amendments and times when you need to build the foundations a little more, but just keep going. Sometime blocks do occur, but work through them. Perhaps an extra cup of coffee or a class of chardonnay will help. Or take a walk in the park with the dogs.

Once finished. Get respected opinions, whether from friends, family or other writers you know. And do not take criticism personally. Use it constructively to improve your work. Once you are happy with the edit, seek further opinions, and then you are ready to publish.
