Writing a kissing scene for a romance novel takes a touch of finesse and imagination and knowing a little secret. It can be fairly easy to write if you can mix in experience and talent. Talent on its own should come natural because if you are writing a novel then you obviously enjoy writing in general. Experience should also part of any writer’s life as the writer is most likely married or of dating age.
Some writers do have a bit of difficulty in writing certain genres or scenes and a kissing scene can be delicate to bring across if it is not the usual forte of the one holding the pen (or typing on a computer). Let us look at how to get through certain scenarios:
It is prom and Bobby wants to kiss Stacy. He has liked her all through high school. Due to his shyness he didn’t ask her to prom and she came with girlfriends. His best friend Charlie asked Stacy’s friend Lisa to dance and Lisa said “Sure, can Stacy dance with you, Bobby?” She asks this because she knows that Stacy has always liked Bobby. Out on the dance floor the two join together like they have always belonged in each other’s arms. Bobby tells Stacy how pretty she looks and as she smiles up at him, he lowers his head and leans in for a kiss. The music playing in the ballroom is nothing compared to the music playing in Bobby’s heart. The kiss he has dreamed of the last four years was everything he imagined and more.
I was able to write that because earlier today my cousin told me her daughter was having her hair fixed for prom tonight so a prom was in the back of my mind. Your novel will already have a history or plot that you have developed and therein will be the key ingredient to a successful scene: you will know your characters and you will lead them through a kiss that will be natural to the two of them.
